Bugs on your Nails?

-March 20th, 2013
I was surprised recently to find out that many non-toxic nail polishes, that boast about being cruelty-free, contain animal based ingredients. One non-vegan ingredient to look out for is Carmine.

Carmine - "[is} a red pigment/dye derived from insects native to South America and Mexico that live as parasites on cactus plants. Used as a colorant in food, cosmetics and textiles." -EWG's Skin Deep Cosmetics Database

I first discovered this ingredient when browsing the web for ethical, healthier beauty products and stumbled upon SunCoatGirl: a beauty line that lists the ingredients found in their nail polishes. I was confused why all the pink and red polishes were not vegan.. but now we know... they have carmine!
